Located about 60 miles northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina, Hickory Public Schools (HPS), consists of nine schools supporting nearly 4000 students. HPS turned to FEA to conduct a facility condition assessment to gain a better understanding of the current condition of its schools and embark on long-term capital planning.
FEA performed a condition assessment of nine schools and two administrative and support facilities. Facility condition assessments play a key role in understanding the current condition and ongoing needs of a facility portfolio. As part of this assessment, FEA examined building and site systems based on age, expected useful life, maintenance history, and operating condition. The assessment identified current conditions and deficiencies, provided recommendations for corrections, and included cost estimates in order to forecast future facility renewal costs.
“Our FCA was the cornerstone for our new capital planning effort. FEA delivered more than we could ask for, on time! By far the best value of any similar effort I have ever contracted for. Complete photo library, critical index calculations, very accurate construction estimates. Don’t start your building program without these professionals!”
–Tony Cox, Director of Operations & Maintenance
The data provided from this assessment enabled the understanding of the current state of HPS facilities by providing a relative comparison of conditions based on facility, site, and system condition indices. In addition, we considered long-term needs to understand what will be required to maintain and fund the ongoing sustainment of HPS facilities over time. By modeling various funding scenarios, we helped HPS to understand the impact various funding levels will have on the future condition of their facilities. Ultimately, through this assessment, FEA provided data and analyses that will help HPS prioritize capital planning and optimize capital funding.
