As organizations, counties, and states prepare for recovery, as FMs, how do we move forward? Right now, if feels like the Wild West, as re-occupancy ideas are as common as webinars on the topic. The problem is there is no one right answer. With this pandemic, there are still a lot of unknowns and with external mandates changing, we need to adapt.
The Harvard Business School Crisis Management for Leaders Program COVID19 Novel Event March 2020 provided great insight and encouraged us to focus on process and resist the urge to provide quick answers. As an FM, we should focus on what we control such as FM essential functions, O&M impacts, and how we will integrate with other departments in our organization to develop re-occupancy procedures. If we develop a strong framework with a consistent process, we can adapt to changing needs during this uncertain time.
IFMA recently released a strategic framework that focuses our efforts on the FM responsibilities which can be found here. Remember it is okay not to have all the answers, the situation is changing, and it will take time to develop the best approach for recovery. Take time to focus and build your own framework with a process that is adaptable.
Discussion: How does IFMA’s strategic framework resonate with you?
