Mitigating Mistakes: Dangerous Debris

Paul Timm discusses how leaving unsecured materials around facilities poses unacceptable risks  in his column on Mitigating Mistakes for the July 2020 edition of SecurityInfoWatch.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), the principle of “maintenance” speaks to the need to furnish an environment that is neat, clean and orderly. A poorly maintained property attracts criminal activity. In fact, CPTED’s “Broken Windows Theory” states that visible signs of disorder (e.g. broken windows left in disrepair) encourage further and potentially increasing levels of crime and disorder.
