Reston Association

Strategic Facilities Plan

Reston, VA

Project Overview

FEA worked with Reston Association to develop a strategic facilities plan that integrated facility condition data, its 10-year capital improvement plan (CIP), and national recreational amenity trends into a framework for long-term decision-making. Reston Association serves more than 60,000 residents and manages community facilities and recreational amenities.

The plan helped Reston Association make informed decisions about facility improvements, enhancements, reinvestments, and potential changes in use across its portfolio.

FEA evaluated how planned CIP investments aligned with facility needs, highlighted gaps and risks, and identified opportunities to coordinate investments. The framework also incorporated accessibility and equity, community involvement, changing recreational trends, asset lifecycle, and reinvestment timing. The plan provided Reston Association with a data-driven approach for prioritizing investments and planning for the future of its facilities.

By connecting facility needs with capital priorities and community goals, the plan gave Reston Association a clear path for making more consistent and defensible investment decisions.

This work built on FEA’s ongoing partnership with Reston Association, including a comprehensive facility condition assessment of community buildings, pools, spas, pool buildings, and more than 100 footbridges.
