The Washington Service Office of the National Park Service (NPS) Facility Management Division has worked with FEA since 2004 for facility condition assessments, deferred maintenance backlog, budgeting and benchmarking. NPS manages 401 parks covering more than 84 million acres with the goal of enabling visitors to experience the national parks in a safe and accessible environment. FEA helps NPS with the forecast of recurring maintenance and equipment schedules and budgeting based on actual condition and benchmarking metrics across the entire NPS asset inventory.
Facility Condition Assessments
FEA completed comprehensive condition assessments at 44 national parks throughout the NPS’s Northeast, Midwest and Intermountain regions. Nearly 600 buildings, over 330 residences and 170 utilities were assessed in the first year.
Assessments included architectural systems, structural systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems and conveying systems. The data collected included an inventory of park-maintained equipment, identification of critical equipment attributes and an assessment of the equipment.
FEA worked with NPS for asset and equipment inventory and data collection, deferred maintenance identification and life-cycle replacement identification. These services enabled NPS to examine service-wide budgeting more programmatically and allocate resources more sensibly.
We revisit park assets on a regular basis to update the inventory and assess the condition and needs of each NPS-maintained asset.
Since the initial assessments, FEA has been engaged to perform assessments in other park facilities, including a utility distribution assessment and sewer line inspections.
