Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised daily. Often, we think of risk in terms of “bad things” that might happen. We experience risk in our everyday lives, such as environmental risks to our homes — floods, earthquakes, and fires; physical risks to ourselves and our families — sickness, personal security, and accidents; and reputational risks — from how well we are performing at our jobs to whether we are progressing up the career ladder.
The risks organizations face are similar, and have very expensive and far-reaching consequences if not properly managed. How do you prioritize planning to mitigate risk? Where should we draw the line between the probability of something “bad” happening in our facility and the actions we should take to avoid the risk?
